Cutting words can be crushing. Proverbs 12:18a says, “There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword…” This scripture compares cruel remarks with a stabbing.

Just as a knife attack can be fatal, verbal abuse can choke its victims. It’s not just what is said, but the way that insults are hurled that can be crippling.

If you have been attacked with words, please don’t underestimate the damage that may have been caused. If you had been stabbed, you would rush to the emergency room.

When it comes to emotional attacks, the enemy will probably tell you that it’s easier to ignore the pain, but your future depends upon your emotional, as well as your physical, health.

Many Types Of Knives!

Verbal attacks come in many guises: insults, ridicule, twisted truth, exposed secrets, bullying and accusation. Each of these is cruel and can crush even a strong soul.

There is something about bullying that is particularly vicious. When someone who has some sort of perceived or actual weakness is antagonized by another who has a form of strength.

The ‘weakness’ could be age, size, seniority, isolation or accent – the list is endless. Bullying is cowardly, it is cruel, and it can be mortifying. It involves a toxic mix of antagonism and humiliation and it can strip its victims of any sense of dignity.

The Bible calls satan ‘the accuser of the brethren’ because accusation is one of the devil’s most trusted tactics for damaging Christians. Full of judgement and vitriol, it can make its targets feel disqualified.

5 Signs You’ve Been Wounded By Words

Proverbs 4:23 is clear: your heart determines the course of your life. Buried pain will affect your reactions and decisions, whether you realize it or not.  Here are 5 sign you may have been wounded by words:

  1. You dislike confrontation
  2. You get defensive when people try to correct you
  3. You hate being the butt of jokes
  4. Certain labels are like a red rag to a bull
  5. You feel hurt when people point out your mistakes

Romans 8:14 tells us that that the sons and daughters of the living God should be directed by the Holy Spirit, not by unresolved emotional pain. If you have been wounded by words, please ask the Lord to heal your heart.

Tell Him what was said and how it made you feel. Share your trauma with your Wonderful Counselor and ask Him to restore. If you’ve been hurt many times by cruel comments, bring each incident to the Lord in prayer and ask Him to remove the dart from your heart.
